On July 7, 2026, Neptune stations retrograde at 4°25′ of Aries. It occurs at 3:55 AM on the West Coast. It will turn direct on December 12 — 158 days later — at 1°36′, also of Aries. For five and a half months, Neptune, the planet of illusion, delusion, illumination, and transcendence, turns inward. Our dreams will still be strong and powerful, but the muse goes quiet. The haze will soften, though it won’t completely disappear. In its place comes something quite rare — rarer than a day in June — and infinitely more valuable: Clarity. This only arrives once the glamour clears, the fog dissipates, and you can finally see what has been right in front of you the whole time.
We are living through one of the most astrologically loaded summers in earth history, and in the middle of it, Neptune retrograde asks a very simple, very unglamorous question: what you’re building — is it real, or is it just beautiful? The vision you’re chasing, the dream you follow — is it really yours, or is it someone else’s dream masquerading as your own? This brave new world we are all building — does it stand on Truth, or is it just wishful thinking, a castle floating in the clouds?
Why This Retrograde Carries So Much Weight
Neptune doesn’t just review, rethink, rehash, and redo when things turn retrograde on a whim. This year, it asks us to look back all the way to 1989, when Saturn and Neptune last came together in conjunction — at 1° of Aries, the very first degree of the entire zodiac. This meeting happens only once every 35 years, so the last time it occurred was in 1989, and so much came apart. So many things were deconstructed. Structures fell as new ones were being born.
That 1989 conjunction mirrored the same theme this one carries, and it wasn’t subtle: the foundations of the world as we knew it were meant to dissolve — as only Neptune can dissolve something — so a genuinely new structure could be built in its place. We are living inside that construction project right now. Not metaphor — fact. The institutions, the systems, the collective agreements about how this world is organized are mid-collapse and about to be rebuilt. That process was set in motion the moment Saturn met Neptune at the beginning of 2026.
Neptune retrograde is the re-inspection of that blueprint, that new build. It’s the moment the new structure pauses and asks itself honestly: is this really what we wanted to build? Did it have shortcuts? Did it have pitfalls? Is it real, or has the vision quietly drifted from the Truth it started with into something very different?
Saturn and Neptune won’t meet exactly again this year, but they come very close, because Aries is about to get very, very busy. Asteroid Pallas Athena stations retrograde on August 14. Asteroid Vesta follows on August 25. Chiron, already retrograde, moves back into Aries — oh boy, one more time — on September 18. All of this lands in the same small stretch of sky Neptune is already transiting. Whatever house Aries holds in your own chart becomes a gathering point for review, rebirth, restructuring, revamping, and renaissance.
This is a time of reckoning, and it will stay that way until December. How you take action, what you devote yourself to, the old wounds still shaping the way you assert yourself, the old narratives and old controlled dramas that get in the way of who you’re actually becoming vis-à-vis who you’ve been performing as — all of it comes up for revision at once.
Four Planets, Four Degrees, One Turning Point
By the middle of July, when the four outer planets align at 4° apiece in what may be the single most significant configuration of this new century, Neptune will already be retrograde. This is no small feat, no small change: the most collectively important sky event in living memory is unfolding while the planet of vision and illusion has already turned to look backward.
I don’t consider this a flaw in cosmic timing. It may be built-in quality control. Whatever gets constructed under this alignment, whatever new build we are collectively raising, will be asked at the exact same moment to prove that it’s honest, that it’s true, that it’s real — not borrowed or blue. Does this actually serve our vision, or is it just for show, for appearance — a mirage or an apparition of things to come? Neptune retrograde is not the occlusion, the shadow, at this moment. It is the gift wrapped up inside it.
Key Dates to Watch
July 14 (Bastille Day) — New Moon in Cancer. One week into the retrograde, at 21° Cancer, with Mercury also retrograde in watery Cancer. This is an emotionally loaded New Moon. It’s your first real taste of what this retrograde brings — clarity can appear now about what you’ve actually been wanting, thinking, dreaming, wishing for, and maybe even seeing, versus what’s really there. This pertains especially to your closest relationships and to home and domestic matters.
August 5-16 — Venus in Libra opposes Neptune. One of the most romantically clarifying windows of the year. Venus, planet of finance and romance, in Libra wants harmony, partnership, a beautiful, gilded version of everything. Standing across from retrograde Neptune, the rose-colored glasses will fall off. Any relationship being held together by projection, by idealization, by the soft-focus version of someone you wish they were rather than who they actually are — this is when you’ll see it plainly. It can be disorienting. It can also be the most liberating thing that happens to you all year. What you finally see clearly, you get to choose.
August 11-23 — Mars in Cancer squares Neptune. This is the most volatile stretch of the entire retrograde. Mars wants to act, but in Cancer it’s watered down — it acts from feeling, from emotion, from psychic impression, from protectiveness, from clinginess, from reflex. Squared against Neptune retrograde in Aries, the friction between wanting to move and not being able to see clearly gets sharp — like driving with your brights on in the fog. This is not a window for big decisions or confrontations. It’s a call for patience — count to ten, then count to ten again, for that whole ten-day stretch. Whatever surfaces here is real information; how you put it to work, how you handle it, decides what lies ahead.
End of August — on August 28, a partial lunar eclipse in Pisces, now that the Moon’s nodes have moved off the Pisces-Virgo axis and into Aquarius-Leo. The effect will be an ending — a powerful piece of water energy arriving in this summer of water and fire. Expect unexpected news. This eclipse will be visible across most of North America, and we will feel it: a push-pull between logic and feeling, love and order, business and personal affairs. This adds to the mix of the whole retrograde.

Who Feels This Most
Unfortunately, the cardinal signs carry the weight of this one — Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn — especially anyone with natal placements between 1 and 4 degrees. Neptune is moving through very early Aries, opposing very early Libra, squaring early Cancer and Capricorn. If your chart has any planet sitting on those degrees, this retrograde is for you.
If your natal Neptune sits between 1 and 4 degrees of Capricorn, you’re in the middle of your generation’s Neptune square — a once-in-a-lifetime transit shared by everyone born in your era. This is where the soft idealism you grew up with gets tested against reality. Whatever survives being dashed on the rocks of reality was always true, and can never be destroyed.
If your natal Neptune sits between 1 and 4 degrees of Libra, you’re living through your Neptune opposition — the classic midlife transit, the moment the planet of your generation’s dreams and illusions stands directly across the sky from where it stood on the day you were born. It can be disorienting, and yet ultimately one of the most liberating, powerful transits a person goes through, because everything you’ve believed about love, about beauty, about relationships, and about how things are supposed to be will get held up to the bright light of how they actually are. Can you handle this? I know Libra will be able to.
How You Move Through This
Neptune retrograde isn’t something to steer around. It’s something to walk straight into.
If you feel disillusioned, disoriented, a bit depressed, a bit melancholy, a little fey — let it be. This isn’t harsh; it just means the illusion is leaving, and that is always, eventually, a gift. If something or someone in your life looks less shiny and more tarnished than you may have believed, resist the urge to rush in and restore that sheen. Sit with what’s actually there instead — it will always be more workable than the dream ever was. Dreams can come true, and they can happen to you, but you cannot afford to live in fantasy at this point in earth history.
Pay close attention to wherever Aries is in your chart, because there’s an extended invitation to look honestly at how you initiate, how you assert, how you be yourself, how you become the person you were meant to be — and whether the direction you’re walking in actually belongs to you, or whether you’ve been following someone else’s vision, maybe an imitation of life.
Protect your creative work. This is not the season for the big launch or the public debut. It’s a season for revision — going back to the original spark before any execution got complicated. What gets made quietly during a Neptune retrograde will often turn out to be the very best work of the year.
Be especially careful during the volatile windows I mentioned, above all the Mars square in mid-August. When the impulse to act collides with a lack of clarity, the wisdom now is to pause. When agitated, feel it, wait it out. Clarity will arrive on the other side of that window, and it may be worth the discomfort of sitting with it a little while longer.
A Closing Thought
Neptune retrograde goes direct on December 12 — the same day Jupiter in Leo will station retrograde conjunct the South Node. Two of the year’s biggest outer-planet turning points, happening on the same date. I don’t take that as coincidence. I believe it is the sky asking, one more time before the year closes, for an honest reappraisal — a serious look, not backward, but inward.
