Before you fret, before you start checking your calendar, your dates, and your words — please take a breath and count to ten.

This is what I know after years of watching the night sky and working with people through these cycles: a retrograde is not a curse. It is not a challenge. It is not karmic retribution. It is not the universe punishing you — and it is certainly not a reason to stop, to hide, or to not go on with our lives.

It is, however, a reason to pay attention.

Mercury goes retrograde on June 29, 2026 at 29° and 14 minutes of the sign of Cancer — considered a karmic or Anaretic Degree of the zodiac. This is an extremely powerful combination. It asks us to slow down and look inward. We don’t freeze. We don’t fear. We may need to hesitate, and redirect, and redress, and review, and reposition, and even rethink — but it will be time to finally deal with the things we’ve been quietly carrying around that we haven’t had the ability, the courage, or the time to walk through.

This is an invitation. And it brings a very special, deeply psychic and emotional energy to this retrograde.

What Cancer Brings to This Retrograde

Cancer is ruled by the Moon. It governs memory, home, family — apple pie and ice cream, the Fourth of July, the good old US of A. It governs emotional security, everything that makes us feel safe, the comfort and succor of the Bible. It is all things that remind us of what it used to be like — maybe our childhood, nostalgia, sometimes a little melancholy. Maybe that baseball game we went to when we were a kid, or the first time we saw the mountains or the beach, or what it was like to be at home, safe, with a family of love — or a family of choice.

Mercury is the planet of communication. Our minds. The Messenger of the Gods — with a small g. The way we process information. Moving backward now through Cancer, it pulls us emotionally backward as well. Old memories surface. Feelings we buried come back up. Words or conversations we had a year ago may replay — and some of these might not be pleasant. Someone or something from the past will come across our path again, or through our thoughts. A family dynamic you thought was done or resolved may not be so.

This is not random. This is purposeful.

Cancer retrograde energy is the universe saying: you didn’t finish that. Now we need to go back and finish it.

This might actually be a gift — if you’re willing to shift your perspective.

Unfinished Business Is the Theme

If there is something in your life that has been left incomplete — emotionally, spiritually, personally, financially, or even in terms of karmic debts — this retrograde is going to bring it to the surface. No longer subsumed, it will flow forth like a spring of water. That’s just how it works. When Mercury is retrograde it reviews, revisits, rehashes, and sometimes relives — and deeply emotional, watery, Cardinal Cancer will make that review very personal, very emotional, and very unavoidable.

Maybe there’s a conversation you didn’t have with someone you needed to. Something that really needed to be said, or something you needed to hear, but the moment passed and you moved on — or at least pretended to. Now that door opens again.

Maybe there’s a debt — financial or otherwise — that has been sitting between you and someone else, driving a wedge, quietly affecting the energy of that relationship. Maybe it’s money. Maybe it’s an apology. Maybe it’s acknowledgment for something you did or didn’t do, or something that was done to you. Whatever form that debt takes, it needs to be settled during this retrograde if at all possible.

And here’s the truth: unfinished business isn’t weakness. Taking care of it is the most powerful thing you can do in terms of self-care. Unfinished things drain us. They delete us. They sidetrack us. At this time, we reposition, we rework, and we rebuild. You don’t need anything sitting in the back of your mind or stuck in your craw, taking up precious space that now belongs to your future. This retrograde is a clearing — and that clearing is a gift.

Exes, Old Friends, and Ghosts From the Past

Cancer’s deeply psychic connection to nostalgia and emotional memory means that during this retrograde, people from your past have a way of returning. Not always in person — maybe even sometimes through dreams — but almost always in the mind and the heart.

You may think about someone you haven’t thought of in years. You might get a text out of nowhere from someone you thought you’d forgotten. You might find yourself replaying old relationship issues in your mind and finally understanding something about it that you couldn’t see when you were in the middle of it.

Approach these moments with curiosity rather than reactivity. Don’t fire off messages to people the minute they cross your mind. Think. Think. Think. No big emotional decisions in the middle of a nostalgia wave. Sit with it. Ask yourself: does this need to be said? Does it need to be said now? And does it need to be said by me?

Think about that chapter of your life — what was happening, what was being taught, what that time was really asking of you. Sometimes the return of someone from the past is a genuine second chance. And other times, it is simply a soul memory. Only you will know the difference.

Watch How You Communicate

Cancer energy can make us indirect. Wishy-washy. Passive aggressive — like a crab sidestepping on the beach. We say we’re fine when we are very much the opposite. It can make us swallow our words, swallow what we really wanted to say, and then wonder why nobody really understands us.

Mercury Retrograde in Cancer amplifies that tendency, and it can create real misunderstandings rooted in emotion — certainly with the people we love most. So please be honest, even when it’s uncomfortable. Say the things that need to be said. But don’t say it like sharp glass — put a little smooth edge on it. Have the conversations you have been avoiding, not to stir up drama, but because honest communication is the only way to actually get closure.

And at the same time, be careful how you interpret communication from others. Written messages — texts, emails — may read completely wrong under this energy. Something neutral might feel cold. Silence could feel like anger. Don’t spiral into a story about someone’s meaning. Ask them. Ask them directly. You’ll save yourself a lot of unnecessary pain.

Home, Family, and the Roots Beneath Your Feet

Cancer rules the home — not just the physical house. Remember: it rules your body, yourself, your belongings, your roots, your family of origin. During this retrograde, home-related matters will tend to surface. Old documents or photos may resurface. Property conversations, real estate issues that got put on hold — these may come back to the table. Family discussions that were never really resolved may find their way back into the room.

If you are navigating anything involving real estate, property, family finances, inheritance, or legacies — read everything very carefully. Then read it again. Remember: with Mercury retrograde, you’ll swear I said to meet you at 4 o’clock on Third Street, but I really said 3 o’clock on Fourth Street. This is not the time to rush through paperwork or sign anything without fully understanding its ramifications. Check and recheck.

And on a deeper level, think about the emotional home in which you grew. The patterns you learned about how to handle your feelings. What was acceptable to express, and what got shut down. This retrograde may bring those early experiences back into your awareness — not to reopen wounds. Remember, Chiron has finally shifted out of Aries — hallelujah — and into stable Taurus. This transit may actually help you to recognize which patterns still belong to you, which ones disrupt your stability and security, and which ones are simply habituated negative thought paradigms that no longer serve who you are becoming.

Move Through It — Don’t Run From It

The people who struggle most during retrogrades are the ones who resist. They push forward when the energy is asking them to pause, to take a powder. They ignore the feelings that come up. They dismiss the returning memories as inconvenient. They try to begin new plans and new projects — and then they wonder why everything falls apart.

The people who move through a retrograde with the most grace are the ones who meet it halfway. They understand this is the time to tie up loose ends. Make plans for the future — but don’t sign. Don’t buy. Watch out for travel snafus, communication boondoggles, and technology that suddenly has a mind of its own.

And pay attention to the world stage. The fact that this retrograde falls during the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence is going to be very interesting. We will be revisiting some very important things on a transpersonal level as a nation — and what surfaces during this time will be worth watching closely.

The only goal through these three weeks is to do the necessary inner and outer work that enables us to move forward when Mercury goes direct on July 23. Finish the thing. Make the call. Have the conversation. Settle what needs to be settled — financially, emotionally, karmically. Forgive what you’re ready to forgive. Release what no longer serves you.

You’ve Got This

Mercury Retrograde in Cancer is not something to dread. It is something to work with. The sky is never working against you — it never is. It is always, always working for your growth.

So let the memories come. Let the feelings rise. Let the past show up, look it in the eye, receive what it came to teach you, and then let it go.

You are not being held back.

You are being prepared.

And when this retrograde lifts — and it will — you will be ready.
