Full Moon in Sagittarius — May 31, 2026
Tonight, May 31st, 2026, at 1:45am on the West Coast, the Full Moon will rise at 9° 56′ in the sign of the Archer, the Centaur.
Be forewarned: This is no ordinary full moon. This is a Blue Moon — a rare second full moon to fall within a single calendar month (the first was on May 1st in deep, dark, and profound Scorpio). Blue Moons, like the saying “once in a blue moon,” bring a rare second chance, a clean break, an unexpected culmination, and then a New Beginning. Take notice and take heed: this opportunity, this moment, won’t come around again for a while.
What makes tonight so special is that the Sagittarius full moon is the smallest full moon of the year, and it rises beside the great Red Star Antares, known as the “rival of Mars.” It is the giant, fiery red heart of the Scorpion Constellation.
The Moon in adventurous, truth-seeking Sagittarius opposes the Sun in mercurial, clever yet curious Gemini. The cosmic question begging to be asked is all about the Bigger Picture: what do you really believe, and where do you wish to be? This is a wandering, expansive spiritual quest — this Lunation.
Where does your heart long to roam?
Sagittarius is the sign of freedom, faith, travel, higher education, my karma ran over my dogma, and the search for meaning in the Universe. Under this full moon, we experience themes of restlessness, wanderlust, and the craving for adventure that can no longer be forfended or denied. Tonight it comes to a head. If your life has felt restricted, limited, stagnant, repressed, or boxed-in, this Sagittarius Moon — with the gifts of discernment and prophecy — is about recognizing it all and breaking free.
Full moons are both Epiphany and release. In fiery, happy-go-lucky, oh-so-lucky Sagittarius, what you now surrender and discard is anything and everything that’s been keeping your horizons small: ties to a depressing past, limiting belief paradigms, stale relations, fear of financial insecurity, ennui or boredom, afeard of taking a Leap of Faith…
This is a very potent night for setting your sights higher — and believing that you can achieve them. Now, a word of caution in this mix:
The full moon comes with a caveat, an edge: a harsh, challenging angle with a Mars square (now in solid and immovable, hard-working Taurus) that will add friction and sparks, some tension — the kind of energy that builds toward impulsive outbursts, angry words, hasty arguments, or reckless, ill-thought-out decisions.
Combined with the extremely malevolent warrior-star Antares — which can exacerbate tensions, expand war, and yet at the same time encourage peace — my suggestion to you is simple: although you may feel a compelling urge to break free, please count to 10. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater, and don’t burn bridges. Rather, channel the angst, while acknowledging that this is just one more facet of the Zeitgeist of the Times. Time to act boldly but constructively, rather than destructively and angrily.
If the Scorpio Full Moon earlier this month was the deep excavation, the Full Moon in Sagittarius on May 31 at 09°56′ is the lightning bolt that accompanies it — sudden, illuminating, and impossible to ignore. Sagittarius is the restless truth-seeker of the zodiac. The Archer would rather be honest and uncomfortable than complacent and deluded. When the moon waxes full in the mutable, versatile sign that rules the 9th House, it underscores our search for meaning in the sometimes meaningless maelstrom that is the 21st century.
It traditionally governs long-distance travel, philosophy, religion, ethics, publishing, and the pursuit of wisdom. Perchance something in our life that was hidden, misunderstood, occluded, or denied is suddenly made blindingly clear. Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius, now in Gemini, is also in the mix. Revolution, disruption, unorthodoxy, earthquakes, new technologies — a stroke of Sagittarian luck coupled with Uranian genius can manifest. Now, ad astra and toward the future!
This moon turns us toward unusual, possibly unpredictable, definitely uncontrollable, and yet very exciting new opportunities. This could be our True Shining Path — not the Orwellian doublespeak of the first one that almost destroyed Peru.
Plans will shatter. Newsflashes occur. Revelations arrive from seemingly above. Travel plans take unexpected detours, and spur-of-the-moment trips open up undreamed-of possibilities.
A belief you may have clung to with absolute certainty may dissolve with a single open and honest conversation. The proximity to fixed star Antares — the heart of the Scorpion, one of the sky’s most powerful and dangerous ancient Behenian Royal Fixed Stars — adds a mythic quality to this turning point. Antares is associated with obsession, intensity, and the courage to face what others won’t. This isn’t a gentle zephyr of intuition or insight — it’s a Thunderbolt.
The Gemini Sun in full opposition, along the axis of information, local reality, computer technology, AI, and all forms of communication, is the messenger of the gods. It now foments tension between what you know (Gemini’s data) and what you believe (Sagittarius’ faith).
This Full Moon may compel us to choose between comfortable, seemingly secure status quo narratives and the Inconvenient Truth. Sagittarius will always choose Truth — not truthiness or hyperbole — and with electrifying Uranus’ influence, you won’t have time to vacillate or equivocate. Be deliberate. Be determined. The realization hits, and you deal with it. Then actualization ensues, and you accept it. Finally, liberation arrives — even if it may seem at first like brouhaha and chaos, as it so often does when humanity appears on the scene hand in hand with trouble.
Be open. Be apprised. Be safe — and then relieved.
Namaste.
