New Moon in Cancer / Bastille Day, July 14, 2026: Is this love… that I’m feeling?
The new moon in watery, deep, cardinal Cancer falls July 14, 2026 at approximately 2:44 AM Pacific time, promptly goes void of course, and then enters fiery Leo at 3:35 PM later in the afternoon. It will be an interesting day.
A new moon is normally a clean slate, a new beginning, a fresh start. I don’t believe this one was designed that way. The new moon falls at 21°59′ of the sign of unconditional love, mother, apple pie, home, and the Fourth of July on the natal chart of the United States of North America — as well as France. The moon reaches zero illumination with Mercury retrograde and the final north node in Pisces, moments before it moves away on the 26th into Aquarius/Leo. So what is this new moon really planting? This is the end of an 18-month evolutionary cycle, opening what some might call an entirely new and revolutionary one.
Cancer rules the emotions, unconditional love, all those things which so often lie hidden away from the surface: intuition, psychic energy, hunches, déjà vu. This particular new moon, so close to Mercury retrograde also transiting Cancer, makes the mind and the emotional body virtually indistinguishable from each other. Right now, what you feel is what you think; what you see is what you know. Something or someone that has been in the background of your awareness now asks to be felt, appreciated — imbibed, if you will — completely, before true clarity and purpose follow.
Beneath this, the karmic north node of the moon sits at 0°18′ of watery, emotional, escapist, delusional yet illuminating and transcendent Pisces, just twelve days from moving into radical, revolutionary Aquarius for the first time since 2007. This new moon happens at the final whisper of the Pisces north node cycle, which means that whatever you are intending, thinking, dreaming — perchance planting — right now happens at the threshold of a radically different evolutionary chapter of your life.
July is one of the most seriously, astrologically important months of this new millennium. The new moon is not a standalone event. It’s not just coming out of left field. It begins a new cosmic sequence that culminates at the unorthodox and breathtaking full moon in futuristic Aquarius this July 29 — six days after Mercury goes direct and three days after the nodes of the moon shift into radical Aquarius and fiery Leo. What begins tomorrow in the deep, deep, deep watery depths of Cancer — with Mercury retrograde also in intuitive Cancer and the north node at the very edge of Pisces — will rise up under an entirely different sky, like a lotus moving up toward the sun from the depths of the muddy waters. Mercury retrograde conjunct this moon has a way of bringing the new moon’s theme, its schematic, its dynamics, up from deep below until it surfaces and is revealed.
New moons are all about reflection before projection — one last look backwards before we attempt that great leap forward. This one is a bit different, because Mercury is retrograde in Cancer at 19°56′, closely conjunct this moon at 21°59′. That conjunction means this new moon is fused with Mercury retrograde, and Mercury retrograde in Cancer is not rushing us forward. It’s impelling us backwards: introspection, deep emotion, melancholy — in some ways going all the way back to 1967 and all the years in between — more interested in what has happened than what lies ahead.
Cancer rules memory, mnemonic function, our past, and the deepest, most private sectors of life. Mercury transiting backward through this area of the heavens impels us to go back into something, someplace, you thought you’d already processed and hoped never to revisit again. By all means, this does not preclude new beginnings. Nothing is off the table. But the new beginnings available to us right now have roots in something older — something that already began, something that needs to be finished. So the thing you’re starting, the intention you’re laying down, the clarity at which you may have arrived, doesn’t come from nowhere. It doesn’t just pop up from the ethers. It’s coming from a place you’ve been before. However, in the light — or lack of it — at this new moon, you’ll see it differently.
The sun, moon, and Mercury together in Cancer create a stellium that makes the sky very water-heavy, inward, and emotion-facing. Our emotional registers are so heightened at this new moon in a way that is not really performative — it is emotive. Therefore, any needs or desires that surface around this time — for security, safety, a place far from the madding crowd, a need to belong, for genuine care, altruistic efforts, and the love of those around us — must be taken seriously. At no stage of these next few weeks should they be rationalized away and filed in the non-emotional binder.
The north node, our karmic reset, at 0°18′ of Pisces, is the final chapter, the final moment of a cycle. This is the part of this new moon that has been ongoing since January 2025. For eighteen months plus, our collective, transpersonal evolutionary direction has been oriented toward dissolution, surrender, spiritual faith, trust, hope, and the release of what no longer has substantive form or function — the kind of faith that doesn’t require evidence but may have needed a miracle. Its opposite, the south node in Virgo, has asked us to release any compulsive need for perfection, over-analysis, over-rationalization, and control as we navigate our way through life. It is time to stop attempting to manage that which is unmanageable, and let the river flow.
Twelve days after this new moon, on July 26, the lunar nodes will shift: the north node into radical Aquarius, the south node into sexy, magnanimous Leo. A brand new cycle begins, and it is categorically different from everything that came before this point in time. The Pisces north node asked for surrender and release — and just exactly where did you put your faith and trust? On the contrary, as Aquarius always is, the Aquarius lunar node asks for collectivization, collective thinking, what lies ahead for the greater good: communal participation, innovation, futurism, and a conscious contribution to the transpersonal stage.
However, for a few more days at this new moon, the node is still in watery Pisces, still tying up very important key aspects — core issues of faith, trust, hope, and inspiration leading to transcendence, which leads to liberation. At the last degrees of Pisces, cohabitating with its best friend Cancer, we look for the courage to let something go, to release something, set it free, and to permit those things to dissolve without trying to rebuild them immediately, like a castle in the sand. Wait till the tide goes out, and then start again. Whatever you begin at this point in time comes truly from a place of surrender rather than strategizing, manipulating, and orchestrating.
This is the last threshold before a great shift, again, in 2027, as Pluto settles into Aquarius, Neptune is in Aries, Uranus is in Gemini, and Saturn is trudging through Aries. These are the pieces of a much larger transpersonal cosmic shift, assembling a new paradigm one planet at a time. The truth about this new moon is that it runs into one of the most significant astrological and energetic shifts of our lifetime: the ongoing Magic Triangle and Barbault’s Cradle, or basket. There is no small reason why July 2026 is an enormous upheaval and radical shift of direction on planet Earth.
For now, whatever we have been teaching or taught, surrendered or cornered, ascended or despaired, we need the willingness to simply permit this next stage of our evolution — without fighting it, kicking and screaming all the way because we didn’t get our way, things have fallen off the rails, the world stage is in chaos, utter madness, and very few clear paths lie ahead. This is Mercury retrograde at its best: obfuscation, red herrings across our path — but not the end of the road. Take a look at your gifts, your aha moments, and how it might behoove you — and lead to benefit and bliss — to take a different approach, a different perspective, a different tack. It’s time for change, which will move into the great change of 2027. You might be asking yourself: what am I doing? How am I doing it? And where do I go? Without any clear answer. That is because Neptune is settling into Aries, where truth meets fiction, where fantasy meets reality, and the ultimate result will be a redirection of our highest and best spiritual purpose.
Venus, at 5° Virgo, is also involved at this new moon. The first configuration is known as a YOD — sometimes called the Finger of God in traditional astrology — formed by Neptune in Aries and Pluto in Aquarius in a sextile, both planets pointed directly at Venus, the beautiful planet of finance and romance. This can be an awkward aspect because it connects signs that share nothing in common — or so it would seem — so the answer may not be really clean. But what happens is this pressure, this YOD if you will, asks these planets to integrate opposites. Strange bedfellows can get along, and the incompatible can miraculously appear in communion. All our themes about love and money, values, beauty, devotion, and those things to which you are actually committed are being highlighted in a way that may not seem to have an obvious solution — but there will be a breakthrough.
Venus is also in opposition to the north node in Pisces, and both are making a hard square to radical, revolutionary, unorthodox, beautiful blue earthquake-owner Uranus in Gemini, forming a powerful T-square. This is about disruption, world stage or personal. Something will be shaken up — let’s hope it’s not the San Andreas Fault. This week, your value, your relationships, your sense of devotion, your sense of belonging are being made, well, unstable — interrupted by unpredictable Uranus in a way that will force a rebalance, a recalibration, a rethink. It can be sudden, so watch out for world stage events this week. It may be something that happens and doesn’t look like you gave your permission. It doesn’t resolve easily, but it will break a stalemate. It will open up the logjam. Whatever has felt stuck or unclear about what you want and where you’re going is going to be pushed into motion, even if the direction — the ultimate destination — is not yet crystal clear.
Finally, this heavy, emotional new moon is all part of the Cancer stellium, when feeling is as thinking. So much heavy water in the sky — in addition to probably bringing some rain to break the droughts, some monsoons to wash away the dust, and perchance a big storm to break that heat dome over our country — creates a concentration of energy that is felt more than physically seen. Cancer is inward, protective, nurturing, clinging. It doesn’t forget, and it doesn’t let go. It is always more concerned with what has substance, what is real, rather than what just looks good. It deals with finance, Wall Street, banking and financial instruments, and the housing market, as well as major weather patterns — yet this is the private interior rather than the public face.
This emotional, intuitive field is what this new moon is all about, and Mercury retrograde in the middle of it is worth paying extra attention to, because the boundary between what you feel and what you think is very permeable. Keywords are resurfacing, re-examining, repurposing, revisiting, rethinking, and redirecting. This is a good chance to understand something that’s been eating you up — the proverbial “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” — from a completely different angle, a completely different viewpoint, one that will permit you a breakthrough when Mercury goes direct in about nine days, and allow you to move on and move ahead.
Use the energy of this spectacular new moon — yes, it’ll be uncomfortable — to take a look at what has real substance. It’s more than apple pie and the Fourth of July. It’s more than Viva la France.
